But Kieran Page's [left] equalising strike four minutes before the half-time break turned the match on its head. Kiwi Tom Grant converted a penalty corner to give Fareham a 3-2 lead which Chris Tagg repeated late on to make it 4-2. The win will give Fareham confidence ahead of Sunday's lunchtime match against Clifton Robinsons, who share the West leaderboard with 14 points alongside Chichester. Three unanswered first half goals paved the way to Chichester's 4-0 win over Ashmoor, the result keeping the West Sussex club top of England Hockey's West Conference. Alex Baxter completed the scoring. 10/20/2025 0 Comments Chichester's late show saves itChichester scored twice in the closing five minutes against Isca in Exeter to maintain their unbeaten West Conference record.

Charlie Gibbons hit Chichester's winner on the hour mark. 10/14/2025 0 Comments Larcombe gets Fareham's winner Phil Larcombe capped a fine individual display by scoring Fareham's second half winner in the 3-2 West Conference victory over previously unbeaten Ashmoor at Henry Cort. His crucial 50th minute strike came as Fareham were busy repelling increased Ashmoor pressure, the South Devon visitors converting only one of their seven second half penalty corners. Fareham snatched an early lead through Ben Randell but, continuing to give the ball away, allowed Ashmoor to equalise through Theo Bennett. Kiwi Tom Randall restored Fareham's lead minutes before half-time and then scored a crucial third goal through Larcombe. It was all hands to the pump when Ben Barnett cut the gap to 3-2 three minutes later, but a series of fine saves by goalkeeper Alex White and Ashmoor's profligate short corner work enabled Fareham to record a key win. 10/10/2025 0 Comments Winchester sunk in early spreeBournemouth scored four times in the opening quarter before sealing a 7-4 victory over winless South Central League rivals Winchester - the umpires brandishing six yellow cards, two of them to Winchester’s Ben Hibberd.

Standing (from left): Luke Emmett, Oscar Pacey, Louis Gibbons, Josh Brown, Alex Thakore, Rob Forrest, Jason Collins. Front: Matt Bell, Charlie Gibbons, Ben Parnham, Tom Spooner, Josh Steel, Alex Baxter, James Davies. Absent: goalkeeper Chris Bristow. Josh Brown converted four penalty corners and Josh Steel and Tom Spencer scored twice each as rampant Chichester went on a nine-goal scoring spree against depleted England Hockey West Conference neighbors Fareham. The 9-1 margin of victory was Chichester’s best yet and, correspondingly Fareham’s heaviest defeat. Alex Bennett set the ball rolling with an eighth minute opener, which Brown doubled before the first quarter break. By half-time, Chichester, in total control, were 3-0 up with Steel scoring from open play. With half their normal league team absent, Fareham were never in the contest, Steel scoring a fourth before Brown converted a trio of short corners. A Tom Spooner brace had Chichester eying double figures before Oli Pemble scored Fareham’s consolation goal in added time. Chichester host Exeter University at the College on Sunday, 2pm, while Fareham head west to Bristol University. 3/26/2024 2 Comments Salisbury crowned championsSalisbury are back in South Central's Division I South, with promotion now guaranteed at the end of this season, and their position as league champions secured.
Back in September and the start of the hockey calendar, Salisbury knew they had a lot to prove. Relegated to Division II South following a tough 2022-23, the club's sights were set firmly on storming the season to re-establish their place back in Division I. And they did just that. Losing just three games of 21 played this year, and now clear of their nearest competitor by six points, with one game to play they can sit back and enjoy their final game against United Services Portsmouth in a couple of weeks' time. 3/16/2024 2 Comments Basingstoke's brand new pitchBasingstoke is celebrating following the completion of a new state of the art hockey pitch at Down Grange, one is the first of its kind in the country.
Work started in January to replace the council-owned pitch and now it is finished users of the facility, which include Basingstoke Hockey Club, can’t wait to start playing on the new surface. With 22 teams and nearly 500 members, the club is one of the biggest in the country, including 13 adult teams, junior teams and players playing in their 60s. The hockey club and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have helped to ensure that members will have access to the latest hockey technology, raising the standard for the sport at Down Grange. It has now adopted an AstroTurf surface, the same which will be used at the Paris Olympics this year. The Poligras Paris GT zero pitch has been funded by the borough council, and a club spokesperson commended the authority for its 'unwavering enthusiasm and commitment to the growth of hockey has helped to pave the way for this ground-breaking project'. The decision to install the innovative pitch surface was driven to provide players and teams in the town with a world-class facility that enhances performance, safety and playing experience. Chair of Basingstoke Hockey Club, Claire Bowman, said: "Our wonderful club is so excited to be the first in the UK to have this Olympic level playing surface, it will provide our members and the local Basingstoke and Deane community with the ultimate sports facility and we are so grateful to the council for supporting the club’s continued development. 2/19/2024 1 Comment Five star Fareham nail ChichesterFareham sank Chichester with four second half goals in ten minutes before adding a fifth to complete a rounding 5-1 England Hockey West Conference victory.
It was Fareham's third win in four matches - one that lifts them into fifth place, five points clear of Cheltenham, who lie in the second from bottom relegation spot. Chichester, whose home match with Cheltenham on Sunday will have a major bearing on matters in the danger zone, bossed the initial stages in the West Sussex sunshine, only to be denied by two fine stick saves by Alex Whyte. Fareham gradually gained a foothold, forcing Chris Bristow into a series of fine saves before the goal spree began three minutes into the second half. Chichester were sliced open by two crisply taken goals in quick succession by Alex Barrett and Joe Jenkinson. The evergreen James Seager made it 3-0 from a penalty stroke before Oli Pemble and Steve Daxter converted short corners to put Fareham out of sight. Oli Baxter clawed a consolation goal back for Chichester six minutes from time. 2/12/2024 0 Comments Fareham win key relegation scrapsAway wins over fellow relegation strugglers Cheltenham and Plymouth Marjon have given Fareham vital breathing space in their seemingly annual battle for National League Western Conference survival.
The 2-1 success at Cheltenham and 4-3 win at Plymouth came either side of a 'near miss' against table toppers Bristol University whom Fareham led 2-1 at half-time before conceding twice in 90 third quarter seconds and lost 3-2. Fareham, whose goals against BU came from Australian Rhys Brnich and a Steve Daxter penalty corner, took the confidence from the university defeat to the west country, where three goals came in the opening 11 minutes. The evergreen James Seager converted a penalty stroke before teenager Charlie Cook cancelled out a Plymouth equaliser, two goals coming in quick succession. Bottom of the log and looking almost certain to be relegated, Plymouth forged 3-2 ahead before Fareham scored twice in five minutes through Daxter and Brnich to seal a vital win. After 12 rounds of matches, Fareham lie three points ahead of Cheltenham, but are only one adrift of a clutch of teams immediately above them, including Chichester, whom they visit on Sunday. 11/27/2023 2 Comments Batter Ben scores 4 of Trojans sixHampshire Academy cricket prospect Ben Mayes is making his hockey stick do the talking, just as his cricket bat did in the summer. He scored four times as Trojans beat South Central Division 1 rivals Henley 6-3, having come from 2-1 down. Picture by Howard Gadsby.
11/27/2023 0 Comments Fareham are hit for six in DevonFareham lurched into a potential West Conference relegation spot after being hit for six by third placed Isca in Exeter.
The 6-1 drubbing by the west country side has left Fareham second to bottom of the table above Plymouth Marjon in a congested bottom half of the log in which only three points separate five teams. Next Sunday's visit to fellow strugglers Cheltenham is now a 'must win' affair for Fareham, who have lost all of their away matches this season, leaking 18 goals in their last three travel days. Cuthbert Shepherd's hat-trick pointed Isca to their 6-1 win. The only time Fareham were on level terms was when Joe Jenkinson cancelled out his eighth-minute equaliser. Shepherd restored Isca's lead before half-time and completed his hat-trick soon after Harry Skinner had converted the first of two penalty corners to make it 4-1. Tom Whitworth got the fifth Skinner completed the scoring. 11/27/2023 0 Comments England's Ben is Havant saviour Teenage talent Ben Hegan celebrated his England Under-18 call up with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Havant salvaged a 3-3 draw from a thrilling South League Division 1 match against high riding Exeter University. Havant led 2-0 at one stage, but a Nick Nurse hat-trick inside 14 late second half minutes threatened a 3-2 Exeter win - until Hegan's last gasp goal. Havant, who have taken seven points from their last four games, found themselves up against a high professional Exeter University outfit, with full sports science support. The west country students set up their own goal tracking video equipment behind the goal, with each player fitted with a GP tracking device. Nonetheless, they found themselves behind after seven minutes, James Speke opening Havant's account, while the hosts owed to the brilliance of goalkeeper Maciej Pacanowski for keeping Exeter at bay. Havant created a number of opportunities before doubling their lead with an outstanding goal by City of Portsmouth raised Owen Barnes, who took a free hit outside the circle, saw a gap and went for it. He eliminated two Exeter defenders with excellent skills and placed the ball past an advancing keeper into the roof of the net to make it 2-0. Just before the end of the third quarter Exeter won their sixth penalty corner but it was Maciej in the Havant goal that continued to frustrate the students. The students threw everything at Havant in the closing stages and three chances in quick succession were denied by excellent defending marshalled by Chris Smith and Viacheslav Paziuk. In the 56th minute the students were rewarded for their efforts when they created a turn over. A few quick passes and entry into Havant’s circle saw Bournemouth product Nick Nurse reverse shot the ball past Pacanowski to halve the lead. Having held the lead for almost an hour, Havant were suddenly hit by two Exeter goals in three minutes, Nurse converting a short corner and then making it 3-2 after an angled shot that Pacanowski initially charged down. It appeared that Exeter, joint second in the table behind leaders Richmond, had stolen the points but in the final play Havant forced a short corner, which Hegan drilled home for the equaliser. 11/24/2023 2 Comments Mixed bag for Fareham Fareham scored an important 2-1 win over Exeter University, but then suffered their first home Henry Cort defeat of the season when second placed West Conference visitors Oxford Hawks beat them 3-1. Penalty corner conversions by George Davey and James Morris earned Fareham the points against Exeter, but the side owed much to teenager goalkeeper Ethan Chapman-Sheath, who pulled off a string of early fine saves. Davey gave Fareham the lead, but Sam Parkes levelled for the Exeter students from a penalty stroke. Teenager Matt Dicker pulled the strings in midfield for Fareham, whose winner came 12 minutes into the second half from a set piece. Chapman-Sheath pulled off several fine saves before the final whistle. A splendidly crafted opening goal, initiated by Joe Jenkinson and crisply converted by Australian newcomer Rhys Brnich, from Perth, gave Fareham a slender 1-0 half-time advantage against Oxford Hawks. But Hawks clawed their way back into it after the break, with three goals in eight minutes - Simon Hill hitting two screaming reverse-stick shots and Austin Greenlea scoring a third. Oxford, skippered by St Cross Symondians cricketer Ed Ellis, share the West Conference leadership with Bristol University, who lost 1-0 to Exeter. Fareham II are well placed in South Central Division 2 and celebrated a 12-month unbeaten home record at Henry Cort when they trimmed Witney 4-3. 11/8/2023 0 Comments Havant off mark in South LeagueHavant are off the mark in the South League with a 3-1 victory over basement club Brighton & Hove - their first league win since lifting the West Conference crown last Spring.
But they had to come from behind to do it - Sam Rose firing Brighton into an early lead which they held until two minutes into the second quarter when Danny Rawlings equalised. In the 47th minute Havant took the lead with a well executed penalty corner. James Speke spinning to eliminate the first runner before passing left to Slavic Paziuk, who fired an unstoppable flick into the Brighton net. Havant then had to soak up the Brighton pressure and defended well to keep their 2-1 lead going into the break at the end of the 3rd quarter. Three minutes from the end Havant scored a point clinching third goal - Slavik Paziuk converting a penalty corner with a drag flick. Fareham beat Havant 4-2 in England Hockey's Tier 1 Cup, having led 3-0 at half-time through Oli Pemble, George Davey and Ron Santonna. Tim Hoare pulled off numerous fine saves for Havant, who clawed a goal back through another Slavik Paziuk set piece. Matt Dicker made it 4-1 for Fareham before Ben Miles got Havant's second. Fareham see Yellow in Devon Fareham found themselves 3-0 down inside the opening 20 minutes of their West Conference visit to Ashmoor, but trimmed the Devonian side's lead to 3-2 with strikes by George Davey and Oli Pemble. A hat-trick goal by Oli Palmer right on the third quarter break sealed Fareham's fate - the Henry Cort team losing its discipline with three late yellow cards and finishing with nine men on the pitch. Fareham host Exeter University at Henry Cort on Sunday (1.30), while Chichester will look to build on their 8-2 defeat of bottom side Plymouth Marjon when they host Oxford Hawks. 10/17/2023 0 Comments Glazier Davey mops up ChichesterWindow cleaner Chris Davey's scrambled goal in the third quarter settled Fareham's West Conference derby against Chichester, who are now four games without a win.
Fareham might have improved on the 1-0 win that has lifted them into mid-table, but Chris Bristow made a number of fine saves as the Henry Cort hosts forced five unconverted corners in the initial 35 minutes. George Bissett was influential in midfield for Fareham, whose winner came from a melee, teenager Matt Dicker having created the initial danger. Promoted Havant suffered a second consecutive four-goal defeat when Richmond ran out 4-0 winners in south-west London. They had been beaten 4-1 by Old Loughtonians the previous week and host 100 per cent South leaders Canterbury at the College on Sunday, 2pm. Trojans have managed only one win from four so far - Oxford Brookes beating them 4-1 - while Bournemouth stay in mid-table after a 3-3 draw at Reading. Matt Dicker grabbed Fareham's late equaliser [ Irfon Bennett picture] Fareham hit back four times to draw 4-4 with Plymouth Marjon - but still had enough chances to beat their Devon visitors, who have yet to win a West Conference game. But Plymouth's winless start looked set to end when some flakey Fareham defending gifted them two goals inside a minute early on - Matt Butt and Ben Hedley, with a far post tap-in, giving the west country side a 2-0 lead. Fareham, soundly beaten 3-1 by Bristol University last week, eventually got going and after a spate of penalty corners, pulled a goal back. Joe Jenkinson injected to the edge of the circle and was on hand at the near post to convert a pass back into the danger area from Joe Caine. A third Plymouth goal and a second for Hedley, set Fareham back again, but by half-time they were back in the game with a James Morris drag flick from another Jenkinson input trimming the Marjon lead to 3-2 at half-time. With Dylan Coleman pulling the strings in midfield, Fareham laid siege to the Plymouth goal after the break, creating and missing chances galore before teenager Matt Dicker set up the lively Ollie Pemble for the equaliser. With fleet footed England U16 starlet Charlie Cook enjoying a sabbatical, Fareham lacked sharpness up front and were also without regular goalminder Alex Whyte, who dislocated his shoulder in the opening day 3-2 win over Cheltenham. Plymouth relied on speedy breaks out of defence and in one such thrust caught Fareham cold, with Matt Butt restoring their lead. Fareham surged forward again with Dicker making it 4-4 from another penalty corner. Chichester, whom Fareham host at Henry Cort on Sunday (1.30), lost 3-0 to Bristol University having drawn both their opening games 2-2. 10/6/2023 0 Comments Havant robbed by late short cornerSport is full of up's and down's - as Havant will testify from their opening two England Hockey South League 1 matches, both of which have ended in 2-2 draws.
Week one saw Havant rescued from defeat by giant Ukranian Slavic Paziuk converting a penalty corner against Team Bath with barely 90 seconds remaining. Fast forward seven days and Teddington repeated the dose, this time with Havant on the receiving end. Havant got their noses in front after seven minutes on Thameside with a Mark Janiszewski strike, which gave the visitors confidence. Five minutes into the third quarter, teenage talent Ben Hegan latched onto a wide pass and majestically weaved his way through the oppositions defence to slot home Havant’s second into the far post. Havant 2-0 up. Teddington fought back and closed the gap from a Kyle White penalty stroke. As the tension mounted, Havant were reduced to nine men for a short period, but still held out. Teddington forced a spate of late short corners, the last of which they converted to level it up at 2-2. Fareham, who inched past Cheltenham 3-2 in their West Conference opener, lost 3-1 at Bristol University, while Chichester drew a second consecutive match 2-2 at Isca. This Sunday, Fareham host winless Plymouth Marjon (Henry Cort 1.30), Chichester receive Bristol University and Havant take on Old Loughtonians (2pm). |
