Charlie has England U16s in sight

Picture
Picture
Talented Fareham teenager Charlie Cook has been named in a 38-player England Under-16 squad for this season’s junior international age group matches.
His selection, alongside Trojans' Matt Dicker [left], from Hedge End,  follows a successful England Hockey Futures Tournament for Saxton Pumas in St Alban's.
Hockey has been in Charlie’s blood almost since he began to walk and run – his father Nigel having been a prominent player for Fareham and, more recently, the team’s coach and manager.
He is also a decent promising all-round cricketer.
Charlie attends Seaford College in West Sussex, where he is coached by former Great Britain Olympian Ben Barnes, who commented: “He’s worked really hard, loves scoring goals and is a skilful and direct player.
“He understands the game well and has a good range of passes too which makes him a dangerous forward but can play in the midfield too.
“It’s the first step on the International ladder but I know he doesn’t want to stop there.”
Barnes, of course, coached Fareham for five seasons before becoming Seaford’s Director of Hockey.
* Eight of the 38 player squad selected are goalkeepers, so Charlie and Matt will, in effect, be competing for two of the 32 outfield places in the full England international squad.

Fareham held in six-goal Exe fest

Picture
Pick that out ! Niall Stott scores Fareham's second goal v Exeter University.
Fareham scored three goals either side of half-time, but their young and relatively inexperienced side was unable to hold on to its advantage against Exeter University seconds, who forced a 3-3 draw with two strikes of their own in the third quarter.
Nonetheless, it was a promising start by Fareham, whose main priority this term will be to retain National League West Conference status.
Exeter, who included recent Portsmouth Grammar School and FHC hit man Alex Beckett in their ranks, were a predictably well drilled and fit, contributed fully to a high tempo start and took a 21st minute lead through Jack Taylor.
But Fareham finished the second quarter strongly, with teen ace Fergus Jackson equalising and skipper Niall Stott giving them a 2-1 interval lead with a placed reverse stick shot.
It got even better for Fareham straight from the third quarter restart with former Winchester midfield man Kieran Molloy setting up Chris Davey to make it 3-1.
But Fareham were unable to hold on to their two-goal advantage as fine goals by Sam Hill and Will Tristem gave the west country students a share of the spoils – the final quarter providing plenty of action with hosts debutant Alex White and his Exeter opposite number making a series of fine saves to keep it to 3-3.
Chichester lost 3-0 to Bristol University, whom Fareham visit at Coombe Down on Sunday.
