Fareham win so Bournemouth last

Fareham Ladies have their first South Women’s League Division 2 win points on the board after surviving an early onslaught and coming from behind to beat Bournemouth 4-1 at Henry Cort.
Bournemouth are now bottom of the log and the only side yet to win. It didn’t look as if it would be that way as they laid siege to the Fareham goal in the opening quarter, but only had an Amy Hill goal to show for their efforts.  Goalkeeper Jilly Tovey was on overtime rates.
“We should have been out of sight and paid the penalty for missing chances,” sighed Bournemouth coach Gavin Rustling.
Fareham’s Vicky Field equalised against the run of play to send the sides in level at half-time – after which the game turned in dramatically in Fareham’s favour.
First, Fareham grabbed the lead with a fine finish by Poppy Roddis after a fine breakaway run by Hannah Ward, then with 15 minutes left on the clock, Bournemouth were awarded a penalty stroke – but Tovey saved Rosie Martineau’s shot.
Fareham were clinging on at the time, but Tovey’s fine save gave them the belief and confidence they could win and when Field scored her second to make it 3-1, the win points were almost secured.
Sian Edwards finally put the game to bed with a blistering last minute penalty corner conversion, leaving Fareham coach Steve Lemon relieved to get the first win points on the board.
He reflected: “There have certainly been times in the last three weeks when we have played better without getting the luck we deserved.
“It’s probably fair to say that 4-1 slightly flattered us but then the reverse happened when there was no way we deserved to lose 3-0 at Teddington, so maybe that evened things up.
“For all that, it wasn't the best we have played this season but by the end of the game there is no doubt we deserved the win and in a division where nine of the twelve sides are separated by just three points then I think we can be happy for now that we are in the middle of that group.”
