k-to-back victories over Teddington and Wimbledon have pushed Southampton ladies into fifth place in South Women’s League Division 3B – a position should they enhance at lowly Horsham on Saturday.
Goals either side of half-time by Bernie Jones and Lauren Carter secured a 2-1 win over the visiting SW19 opposition. Southampton enjoyed some good chances but had to wait until three minutes before the break to take the lead from a penalty corner – Nat Romain’s shot being deflected into the roof of the Wimbledon net by Bernie Jones. Predictably, Southampton faced a pepped up Don’s at the start of the second period, but repelled the pressure before doubling their lead through Lauren Carter, who drilled a shot through the keeper’s legs. Southampton’s new found two-goal advantage lasted only seven minutes as Wimbledon closed the gap from a penalty stroke, which goalkeeper Rachel Adams almost got to. Controlled defence was paramount after that, but Southampton kept their heads and ran down to clock to secure a 2-1 win.
