Stuart Swift hit a hat-trick, including a last gasp winner, as Winchester II wiped out a 3-1 deficit to beat last season’s runaway Hampshire League champions Gillingham, who were making their Regional Division debut.
Swift opened the scoring, but Gillingham scored the next three goals to lead 3-1. Winchester refused to lie down and hit back through St Cross Symondians cricketer Matt Stokes. Ten minutes later Ed Player set up Swift for the equaliser and with just two minutes left, Winchester’s balding maestro completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot to give the city side a 4-3 win. Romsey pulled off a 2-1 win at Addiscombe, but Southampton, 3-0 down to Wanderers, scored two late goals but were unable to salvage a draw.
