Trojans’ youngsters came close to reaching England Hockey’s Under-18 indoor sixes national finals, bowing out in the South semi-finals to powerful Surbiton at Whitgift School.
They beat Sevenoaks 2-1, Horsham 6-0 and Winchester 5-1 before being held to a goal-less draw by Canterbury and losing by a single goal to Guildford. The three group wins was sufficient to get them into the last four, but Surbiton, one of the country’s top clubs, beat them 3-1. “It was a fantastic performance by the lads,” enthused coach Ian Bassett. “There were some seriously good sides at the tournament, with Guildford pipping Surbiton in the final.”
