Not for the first time this season, Winchester were denied a point with visiting South Premier League rivals Bromley and Beckenham snatching a dramatic late 4-3 winner.
Missing key defensive players, Winchester could have feared the worst against their third-placed SPL1 opponents and reacted accordingly, but they showed attacking spirit from the start, Kent Langridge flashing an early chance across the face of goal. However, on ten minutes, Bromley and Beckenham took the lead from a penalty corner, which would prove to be the source of all their goals, former Havant hit man Sam Druce bagging a hat-trick, writes Jon Player. Their lead did not last long as Adam Major picked up the ball after Todd Hutcheson's right channel surge and placed the ball in the corner, unusually with an open stick strike. The remainder of the half was a high energy, end to end affair, although neither keeper was tested as defensive tackles and interceptions defused problems in both "D's" with Micah Smithard and James Pauley excellent as stand-in centre backs. Mark Maunsell should also be singled out for a match-long succession of important reaction interceptions and turning defence into attack. The start of the second half saw a stunning four goals in seven minutes as Winchester initially took the lead for the only time in the game, Kent Langridge deflecting Ben Hibberd's drag-flick past the keeper, as seen in the above photograph. Two minutes later, Bromley and Beckenham levelled with a low drag to the right hand post and then quickly turned the game around with a third penalty corner goal, keeper Dave Jones being wrong footed by a deflection. Immediately Winchester responded with Hibberd finding space deep in the opposition "D", pulling back for skipper Kieran Malloy to deflect into the net. The game continued to be at high pace, with Jones now having to make saves as the visitors had the marginal edge in attacking threat. Bromley and Beckenham won a penalty corner with their final attack and duly converted with a ball back towards the injector angled his deflection past Jones.
